Nigeria has one of Africaโ€™s largest and most influential economies, supported by energy, agriculture, telecommunications, trade, manufacturing, finance, and a rapidly expanding digital sector. Its large population creates a substantial domestic consumer market, while major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt serve as important centers for commerce, investment, and entrepreneurship. Although oil remains a major source of exports and government revenue, non-oil industries are becoming increasingly important to economic activity. This page provides the latest Nigeria GDP data, historical trends, and economic outlook for 2026.

Nigeria Economy Overview

Nigeria has a diversified emerging economy in which services, agriculture, industry, and energy all make significant contributions to GDP. The services sector is the largest part of the economy, led by telecommunications, banking, retail, transportation, entertainment, real estate, and professional activities. Nigeria has also developed one of Africaโ€™s most dynamic technology ecosystems, with fintech, e-commerce, digital payments, and software businesses attracting both domestic and international investment.

Oil and natural gas remain central to export earnings, but agriculture continues to employ a large share of the population and produces crops such as cassava, yams, maize, rice, cocoa, and palm oil. Manufacturing includes cement, food processing, textiles, fertilizers, consumer goods, and petroleum products. Further investment in electricity, transport networks, refining, digital infrastructure, and local production could strengthen economic diversification and reduce dependence on imported goods.

Nigeria GDP Outlook

Nigeriaโ€™s economic outlook is supported by its large consumer market, expanding digital economy, growing financial services industry, and efforts to increase domestic energy and manufacturing capacity. Reforms in taxation, foreign exchange management, infrastructure, and private-sector investment could improve productivity and encourage stronger long-term growth. However, inflation, currency weakness, security challenges, power shortages, and fluctuations in oil prices may continue to affect short-term performance. Despite these risks, Nigeria retains considerable economic potential due to its population, natural resources, entrepreneurial activity, and regional influence.
