Paraguay Economy Overview

Paraguay has an export-driven economy based on commercial agriculture, livestock, hydropower, and regional trade. Soybeans, beef, maize, wheat, rice, and oilseeds account for a large share of merchandise exports. Fertile land and large-scale farming operations have supported the development of food processing and agricultural supply industries.

The Itaipu and Yacyretá hydroelectric facilities generate abundant electricity, much of which is exported to neighboring countries. Low-cost power has also encouraged investment in manufacturing, metal processing, and energy-intensive activities. Commerce, banking, construction, transportation, and river logistics contribute to the service economy. The Paraguay and Paraná river systems provide essential trade access for the landlocked country.

Paraguay GDP Outlook

Paraguay’s economic prospects are supported by commercial agriculture, livestock production, hydropower, low-cost electricity, and growing investment in manufacturing. Food processing, forestry, renewable energy, logistics, and export-oriented industries could broaden the economy beyond primary commodities. Improved river transport and regional connections may strengthen trade competitiveness. Droughts, flooding, fluctuations in soybean and beef prices, dependence on neighboring markets, informal employment, and infrastructure gaps remain the principal risks.
