Cuba Economy Overview

Cuba has a predominantly state-directed economy where government services, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and trade all contribute to national production. Healthcare and education employ large numbers of workers, while tourism has historically provided an important source of foreign currency. Nickel mining, tobacco products, rum, sugar, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and selected agricultural goods contribute to exports. Small private businesses have become increasingly visible in restaurants, transportation, accommodation, and retail. Foreign-exchange shortages, import dependence, energy constraints, and international sanctions continue to shape the country's economic environment.

Cuba GDP Outlook

Cubaโ€™s economic outlook remains difficult because of foreign-exchange shortages, weak investment, energy constraints, and limited access to international finance. Tourism, agriculture, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nickel, and private small businesses could support recovery if operating conditions improve. Greater productivity and trade diversification would be critical for stronger growth. Sanctions, import dependence, demographic decline, infrastructure deterioration, inflation, and currency distortions remain major challenges.
