Djibouti Economy Overview

Djibouti's economy is built around its strategic position at the entrance to the Red Sea, making ports and logistics its most valuable commercial assets. Container terminals, freight handling, warehousing, and transportation services serve international shipping and provide Ethiopia with an important route to global markets. Military bases operated by foreign countries also contribute income and demand for local services. Telecommunications, construction, banking, public administration, and trade form much of the remaining economy. Limited rainfall restricts agriculture, increasing dependence on imported food. Investment in ports, railways, free-trade zones, and renewable energy continues to strengthen Djibouti's logistics-centered development model.

Djibouti GDP Outlook

Djibouti is positioned to benefit from continued port development, logistics, regional trade, and infrastructure investment. Its strategic location near major shipping routes gives the country long-term advantages in transport, warehousing, and commercial services. Renewable energy and free-trade zones may provide additional opportunities. High public debt, dependence on external financing, limited domestic production, unemployment, and exposure to regional instability remain important challenges.
