Myanmar Economy Overview
Myanmarโs economy relies on agriculture, natural resources, manufacturing, and domestic commerce. Rice is the main agricultural crop, accompanied by beans, pulses, maize, sesame, rubber, fisheries, and livestock. Rural production remains central to employment and household incomes across much of the country.
Natural gas, jade, gemstones, timber, copper, and other minerals generate export revenue. Garment factories and food processing had become important manufacturing activities, particularly around major cities and industrial zones. However, political instability, armed conflict, electricity shortages, banking disruptions, sanctions, and reduced foreign investment have damaged production and trade. Informal activity plays a substantial role as businesses respond to limited financial and institutional capacity.
Myanmar GDP Outlook
Myanmarโs economic outlook remains highly uncertain because of conflict, political instability, weakened institutions, and disruptions to trade and investment. Agriculture, natural gas, garments, food processing, and informal commerce may continue to sustain basic activity, but broader recovery requires improved security and reliable access to electricity, banking, and transportation. Currency depreciation, inflation, sanctions, workforce displacement, reduced foreign investment, damaged infrastructure, and interruptions to domestic supply chains present substantial downside risks.
