Tanzania Economy Overview

Tanzania has a wide economic base that combines agriculture, mining, tourism, construction, trade, and transportation. Farming supports a large share of the population and produces maize, cassava, rice, coffee, tea, cotton, tobacco, cashews, and livestock. Agricultural processing remains important for domestic food supply and exports.

Gold is the country’s leading mineral export, while natural gas, coal, gemstones, and other resources contribute to mining activity. Tourism benefits from wildlife reserves, Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and Indian Ocean beaches. Dar es Salaam’s port serves Tanzania and several landlocked neighboring countries. Investment in railways, roads, electricity, ports, and urban infrastructure is strengthening regional connectivity and industrial development.

Tanzania GDP Outlook

Tanzania has favorable long-term prospects because of its growing population, natural resources, infrastructure investment, and access to regional markets. Agriculture, mining, tourism, construction, transportation, natural gas, and manufacturing could provide multiple sources of expansion. New railways, ports, electricity projects, and trade corridors may strengthen Tanzania’s role as a gateway for landlocked neighboring economies. Climate shocks, public financing constraints, limited industrial productivity, regulatory uncertainty, and insufficient formal employment remain important obstacles.
